形态描述：多年生亚灌木或灌木，高2-3米，被毛或除叶柄和叶背脉外近无毛；小枝暗紫色，具棱角。叶掌状3-5深裂，直径7-12厘米，裂片卵形或长圆形，深裂达叶片中部以下，先端长渐尖，中裂片较长，侧裂片通常广展，基部心形；叶柄较长于叶片，被散生黑色腺点；托叶披针状镰形，长约1厘米，常早落。花顶生或腋生，花梗常短于叶柄，被星状长柔毛和黑色腺点；小苞片5或更多，分离，基部心形，宽卵形，长3.5-5厘米，边缘具长粗齿10-15；花萼杯状，截头形，具黑色腺点；花冠钟形，淡黄色，内面基部紫色，长约为小苞片的2-3倍，花瓣倒卵形，具缺刻，外面被星状长柔毛；雄蕊柱无毛。蒴果长圆状卵形，长3-5厘米，基部大，顶端急尖，外面被明显腺点，通常3室，很少为4室；种子卵形，具喙，长约8毫米，彼此离生，被易剥离的白色长棉毛，剥毛后表面黑色，光滑，仅一端或两端具少量不易剥离的短棉毛。花期夏秋间。
